The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has published figures showing that the equivalent of a jumbo jet full of people dying because of work every fortnight. Their numbers are much higher than the figures published by the HSE as they take into account more than 241 people who die in accidents at work.
RoSPA figures include those who die in work related road accidents and those who came to a premature death due health problems created by the working conditions. The complete figure they have developed is that 400 people die each week as a result of their working conditions.
Roger Bibbings, Occupational Safety Advisor for RoSPA points highlight the tragic fact that many of these deaths are not unnoticed to the general public.
"If a jumbo jet crashed every two weeks, killing 400 people on board there would be a national outcry – and is the speed at which people are dying. [but] because workers rarely die in the event of major disaster, their fate and suffering quiet family tends to go unnoticed. "
By focusing on accidents at work and not taking into account the bigger picture and great risks that workers face every day, we are missing a big part of victims. Accidental injuries sustained at work are the most reported and are generally types of business claim compensation for victims.
People need to be aware that it should not be an accident odd for them to turn against their employer. If your health has suffered in any way as a result of your work, you may be able to claim.
Roger Bibbings Re reiterates the magnitude of the problem on injuries and deaths. The figures are almost uncomprehensible.
"It injuries are more than 1.1 million work-related and each year about 2.2 million cases of ill health caused or made worse by work. In all, It is estimated [cost the companies] about 36 million workdays lost. [This is] the equivalent of more than 20 jumbo landing every day in the UK loaded with sick and injured. "
Driving Force is one of the biggest risks as RoSPA figures. THE ACCIDENTS Drving are often underestimated and can be difficult to ensure that driving is a dangerous activity that we all take at some point. Employers are required to reduce the risks incurred by employees driving to work. Approximately 1,000 people die while on the road because of their jobs.
Those who suffer from health problems leading to early death are difficult to acurately count, but the figure is estimated to run into the thousands.
