When you etch glass using HF what happens to fluorosilicic acid and what remains in its place?
The reaction of the etching glass is: SiO2 (s) + 6HF (aq) → H2 [SiF6] (aq) + 2H2O (l), but what happens on the solid glass is left in its place, namely What is its surface chemistry?
The reaction products leave the scene (as aqueous solution) when you wash the windows. If you've weighed the glass before and after you see weight loss as thin silica was removed from the surface. The glass is originally flat and highly polished so that clear. During the etching, the surface is eliminated and little irregular surface left rough. This causes all sorts of irregular refractions and reflections of light. Sanding produces the same effect. The surface seems far from clear. In response to the imperative question nothing is left in place fluorosilicic acid – it's just a vessel to remove the silica.
